Yoga For Weight Loss

Salisbury Yoga For Weight Loss

Q.  Is Yoga an effective exercise for weight loss?

A.  Yoga isn’t the best exercise as far as losing weight is concerned - unless you are seriously into Ashtanga or Power Yoga combined with a good diet - but that shouldn't stop you from practising it. Yoga can be an excellent discipline, and regular practice under qualified supervision can help maintain and improve flexibility, improve co-ordination, and help to reduce stress.

The best calorie burning exercises are those which involve the use of large muscle groups in activities such as:

· Walking
· Swimming
· Cycling
· Resistance Training (weights or your own body weight)

Resistance Training is particuarly good for raising your body’s metabolism and helps you to control your weight long term. When the above mentioned activities are combined with a sensible calorie controlled healthy eating plan ,you’ll quickly see your weight starting to reduce.

Some other benefits associated with resistance training are:

· Joint protection; knees, hips, lower back and shoulders
· Reduced risk of Osteoporosis
· Control or reduced blood pressure in some cases
· Improve balance and co-ordination

Here are 5 key elements you should have in your exercise routine to help reduce and control your weight long term:

1. Resistance training that works a multiple of large muscles at once – this will reduce your exercise time

2. Short high level bursts of cardiovascular exercise – again this will reduce your exercise time.

3. Include some core stability exercises

4. Warm up and cool down

5. A regular update of your goals

If Yoga is your starting point for weight loss that’s great, but understand for maximum results you’ll need to incorporate other exercise methods.
